Title of Project: Literary Journal

Abstract of Project: The compilation and design of a forty page Literary Journal with three unique covers.

Larger Purpose: I compiled a forty page mock-up of a literary journal with two unique covers. I did this because I want to go to Graduate School after I graduate with my Bachelor’s. Most English MFA programs include literary journals. I believe that since I compiled a mock-up one for my project I will set myself apart with my resume and the skills learned from compiling a literary journal.

Project Goal: For my EDGE Project I designed and compiled a forty page mock-up of a literary journal with three different unique covers.

I was able to achieve this by taking past things that I have written and compiling them all together. Just like with a literary journal I went through the giant pile of everything that I had gathered. Reading through each piece I decided whether something was accepted, rejected, or a maybe. Once I had the rejects out of the way I went ahead and went through the accepted pieces checking the overall page count. I was short by about three pages, so I went into the maybe pile and began deciding which of the shorter pieces I wanted to include in the mock-up. After this process was when I went and edited things and started compiling the journal. I was able to create the three covers that I am including by taking a graphic design class that was offered here. This helped me greatly in my creation of the covers.

1-3 Outcomes:

  1. I designed a literary journal so I will have a contingency backup career.

  2. I designed a literary journal so I can boost my resume and set myself apart for Graduate School.

Since I have not started a career or graduate school yet I have no proof of the outcomes of my project. Though I have no proof of these achievements, through research I have come to the conclusion that because I have done this as my EDGE project it will help me with my desired outcomes. I have also come to this conclusion by talking to professors about graduate school applications and careers within the English field. So I hope these outcomes will be evident when I begin applying to graduate schools this fall. An outcome that did prove fruitful and immediate was the insightful information doing this project has brought to being in the Kolob Canyon Review. When it came time to look at page layouts and design proofs I was able to have a good understanding of how that all worked. This was because of the time I did working on this project.

Deliverables: At the end of my EDGE Project I will turn in a flash drive with a PDF of the forty page mock-up literary journal, two printed copies of the journal (one to turn in and one for my personal portfolio), scanned copies of passages that I hand edited, written responses to the pieces in the journal as well as written responses to the journal itself, and printed versions of the two different covers for the journal. I decided to go against making two prints of the mock-up journal I created since most literary journals these days are published electronically online, and also since this is only a mock-up I felt justified that it would be more cost efficient and wise to keep it as an electronic document. Going along with this I decided against printing out the two covers as well and instead created a third cover to compensate for not having two printed covers for the journal. Due to a corruption of files when I tried downloading everything onto a zip for my project deliverable earlier this semester, which caused me to have to drop the class and redo certain aspects of my project, I am submitting the literary journal as a PDF uploaded directly from InDesign into my google drive to replace the use of a zip drive. I did research and found this was the safest way to have the files shared and uploaded from the Adobe application. The proof of process; the images taken of line edits and responses to certain pieces and the finished journal will be included in this document. Also uploaded as a PDF file from google drive will be the three different covers that I conceptualized for the cover of the literary journal.
